'Tell me one last thing,' said Harry, 'is this real? Or has this been happening in my head?''Of course it is happening inside your head, Harry, but why on earth should that mean that it is not real?'

My mom cheated me again.
Today she ‘forced’ me to drink her fish soup (‘no oil, got XYZ herb inside, good for skin, etcetc’) even though I was very full. I relented after she said she would give me the smallest bowl - the kind machiam the wuxia warriors drink their tea from, and proceeded to bathe. When I was about to drink the soup, I realized the small bowl had ‘upsized’ to a rice bowl and the soup was filled to the brim. I immediately protested to which my mom answered, kind of sheepishly, “aiya, the small bowl can’t even hold one ladle of soup!” before escaping from the kitchen. Thus, I was left with one large bowl of steaming hot fish soup, feeling cheated.
This is how my mom always treated my brothers and I. since young, she always gave us the best of everything, especially food-wise. She would make sure we had second helpings of the ‘good’ stuff, whether we like it or not. I can’t remember how many times she forced an extra piece of salmon or cod fish onto my plate, or how many times my plate would be piled with more meat or liao than anyone else.
The following is a very typical scene during mealtimes:
Mom: You want to eat more fish/meat? It is good for your eyes/brain/skin.
Me: Don’t want. I very full already.
Mom: Why don’t want? The radio/TV say it is good for health. This fish/meat very expensive leh!
Me: But I’m really very full already! (*meat/fish gets closer to my plate) Eh I don’t want ar!! (*shifts my plate away from my mom but meat/fish will end up on my plate) If you already want to give me still ask me for what?!?!
I resented it as I felt as though even my right to what I choose to eat is violated and that she is being unreasonable and over-controlling. So I would always dump the food onto another plate and refuse to eat any of it, to the unhappiness of both parties. But I have since passed that stubborn and rebellious stage. Perhaps now that we are all grown up, she also knows that we meant it when we say we can’t finish the food. But still, it doesn’t stop her from sneaking that extra piece of delicacy onto us.
But I know my mom is a very conventional woman; she does not shower us with lavish gifts or praises unlike other moms. Her ‘showering’ us with good food is her best way of showing her love and concern for us. (Duh, I mean why else would a parent give good food to her kids?) I guess now that I’m more mature (read: old), I sort of understand her pov better and am beginning to appreciate the stuff she does for the family. But still that doesn’t mean I would accept the all her food offerings.
But so did I finish that gigantic bowl of soup? Yep, every last drop of it. So here I am, feeling extremely bloated and praying that the soup better deliver the magical properties my mom claimed, but also not without feeling a fuzzy warmness in my heart. thanks mom (:

'An Afghan National Army soldier prays during a foot patrol with unseen US Marines from India Company, 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines near a poppy field in a stronghold Taliban area of Marjah, Helmand province, southern Afghanistan, on April 5, 2010. Nearly two months after US Marines led what was billed the biggest offensive against the Taliban in more than eight years of war, troops still come under daily fire from insurgents and bombs are still exploding. - Photo - AP'ST's 'News in Pictures on Tuesday' is the main reason why i would visit the ST online version. the photos featured, together with the well-phrased captions, really encapsulate the news well in a meaningful manner. take the above picture as example. it features an afghan national army soldier praying in front of a poppy field with his gun resting against the wall. seriously, this portrayed such a peaceful yet melancholic scene! the harmony of such differing elements (praying, poppy fields vs gun, soldier, context of war) totally left me feeling awed. (:
yet another news on today's ST left me with a bitter taste in the mouth. according to 'Grads Get Jobs in 6 Months', it was reported that 90% of the grads got employed within 6 months of graduation and that the average salary of a NUS bizad grad is $3.2k! omg! serious not! $3.2k?! got so much meh?? me smells a case of flawed survey and over-reporting..
